USL Division 1 and Promotion
First League in the US with Promotion and Relegation
Major news in American Soccer: The USL are going to create a Division 1 League to compete directly with the MLS as the top professional league in the country. While the USL will have a long way to go to meet the insane valuations we have seen in the MLS recently, it will certainly disrupt the status quo and potentially change the US Soccer landscape forever. The USL Division 1 will launch in 2027-2028, and there are rumors that promotion and relegation will be involved. I applaud the USL’s ambitious move and I really hope it works out, because I believe the relegation and promotion battle will make every season much more exciting. By replicating Europe’s football pyramid, the USL is taking a bold step, though questions remain about how it will work in the U.S. market.
Who will join?
Clubs with 15,000 seat capacity
Based in a metro area with at least 1 million people
I am intrigued to see how Division 1 will entice more players to look outside of the MLS for professional opportunities. As more players come up through the USL Youth League, don’t be surprised if they start feeling more loyalty to the USL than MLS, with a strong pathway from Academy to Pro. It will be interesting to see who will be the initial sponsors, but with investment in Soccer growing at a rapid pace in the US and MLS expansion fees rising (San Diego FC is rumored to have paid $500 million) this move could see more investors getting into a new league at a much cheaper cost. The USL seems to be aligning itself more with FIFA and other big international bodies, maybe in hopes of gaining support through their pyramid structure, used as FIFA’s main argument against the breakaway European Super League.
Most likely the 12-14 team Division 1 League will include some of the established USL Championship teams, but there will definitely be room for new teams in interesting markets. This ambitious move by the USL could redefine American football’s future. With more questions than answers at this stage, we’ll be watching closely for future updates. We will see how big of a shakeup this becomes and if it will bring promotion and relegation to the US, but one thing we definitely know change is coming to American Soccer.
How do you see the USL’s move to create a Division 1 league impact the professional landscape in the future? Please share with anyone who might find this type of content valuable and reply to share your thoughts.
